Dear Editor, Lyn Brooks puts her finger on the key to the whole Ukraine dispute; Putin’s understandable determination not to allow NATO to control Sebastopol, a major port of the Russian Black Sea fleet. If Merkel had managed to persuade Poroshenko to join the EU but not NATO what motive would Putin have had to invade the Crimea? Of course Obama and his poodle Cameron know this perfectly well, so if WW3 erupts it is clear whom to blame.
There is another question in my mind; why is America still part of NATO? Russia is no longer communist and a threat to the free world but is a trading partner of Europe and the West generally. I suggest we ask America to leave NATO and invite Russia to join instead. End of Crimean crisis.
